Square Footage & Multi-Area Calculator

Add up square footage across multiple rooms or areas, then apply a waste allowance for material ordering.

1. Area Segment Dimensions

Enter a length and width for each area, then add it to your running total below.

2. Material Waste Adjustment

Add a waste allowance to cover trim cuts and layout loss.

Gross Total Area (With Waste)
0.00 sq ft
Net Base Area (Summed)
0.00 sq ft
Cubic Yards Equivalent
0.00 m²

How the Waste Allowance Works

Square footage is just length times width for each area, added together. The waste allowance adds a percentage on top of that total to cover cut-offs, pattern matching, and mistakes, so you order enough material the first time. or field trimming actions.

Worked Example

A 12 ft by 15 ft living room (180 sq ft) plus a 10 ft by 10 ft bedroom (100 sq ft) totals 280 sq ft. Add a 10% waste allowance for a flooring job and you'd order about 308 sq ft of material.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting closets, hallways, or irregular nooks when tallying up multiple rooms.
  • Using too low a waste allowance for diagonal or patterned material layouts, which typically need more cut allowance than a straight layout.
  • Not breaking odd-shaped rooms into two or more rectangles before adding them up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste allowance should I add for tile?
10% is typical for a straight layout; diagonal patterns or large-format tile often need 15% or more.
Can I use this for multiple different rooms in one project?
Yes, add each room's area to the running total, then apply one waste allowance across the combined square footage.
Does this account for odd angles or curves?
No, break irregular shapes into simple rectangles first, then add each one in separately.
