How Scale Factors Work

A scale factor is the ratio between the drawing and real life. A 1/4" = 1'-0" drawing has a scale factor of 48, meaning every inch on the page equals 48 inches in the finished building. Multiply your on-page measurement by that factor to get the real-world size.

Worked Example

A measurement of 2.5 inches on a 1/4" = 1'-0" scale drawing (scale factor 48) represents exactly 10 feet in real life.

Common Mistakes

  • Reading the wrong architectural scale off a scaled ruler; 1/4" and 3/8" scales look similar at a glance but produce very different real-world sizes.
  • Assuming a photocopy or PDF printout is still to scale; scanning and printing frequently shifts the actual scale slightly.
  • Mixing up engineering scales (like 1"=20') with architectural scales (like 1/4"=1'-0"); they use entirely different factor systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what scale my drawing is at?
Check the title block, it's almost always noted there. If not, measure a dimension with a known real-world size and back into the scale factor.
What is a scale factor?
The multiplier between a measurement on paper and its real-world size. A 1/4"=1'-0" drawing has a factor of 48.
Is a photocopy of my drawing still accurate to scale?
Not necessarily. Photocopiers and some printers can slightly resize a page. Measure a known dimension to confirm before trusting a copy's scale.
